Many people have played a vital role to the building and development of PacLII and laying the foundations for its long-term success. Through their dedication, expertise and collaboration, they helped make Pacific laws widely and freely accessible online, strengthening transparency, legal knowledge and access to justice across the region. Their contributions continue to have a lasting impact:
Professor Robert Hughes
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Law, University of the South Pacific, School of Law 1997-2005
Professor Hughes initiated the creation of the School of Law website in 1997. Subsequently he supported the development of the site under the USP/AustLII cooperative project, which enabled the launch of PacLII in 2001.
Robynne Blake
Director of the Pacific Islands Legal Information Institute 2001-2007
Manager of the School of Law Internet Project 1998-2001
In 1998 Robynne became the Manager of the School of Law Internet Project, the predecessor to PacLII. Subsequently, with the assistance of AustLII, the Internet Project morphed into PacLII and was launched in 2001 with Robynne as the Director. With PacLII forming part of the world-wide network of Legal Information Institutes at her instigation and expanding its operations at a rapid rate Robynne retired as Director in 2007.
Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII)
Professors Graham Greenleaf, Andrew Mowbray, Philip Chung, and all the AustLII staff have been instrumental in the establishment, technical development, and continued operation of PacLII since its inception in 2001. PacLII's website is hosted by AustLII in Sydney and AustLII provides the necessary servers and technical support, ensuring high availability and reliability for the PacLII site.
Wilford Gibson Lol
Senior Linux/Unix Systems Administrator 2014-2022
IT Manager 2001-2006
Wilford was a key IT implementer in the technical set up of PacLII, assisting with the conversion of the Internet Project website to the Linux database platform for compatibility with the WorldLII network. This included migrating existing HTML documents, configuring the data registries, and implementing the hardware infrastructure. He also assisted with the design and implementation of the Pacific Islands Treaty Series database.
Peter Murgatroyd
Emalus Campus Librarian, University of the South Pacific
Peter Murgatroyd and the library staff gave invaluable and high level of support in both the Law Internet Project and later the creation and development of PacLII.
Emeritus Professor Don Paterson
University of the South Pacific, School of Law
Professor Paterson authored the learned series 'Sources of Law' for PacLII, which is an invaluable 'road map' through the origins of Pacific laws. He was a strong supporter of PacLII and provided considerable support and advice to its development and improvement.
Lenore Hamilton
Director of PacLII 2007-2016
Lenore was PacLII's Director for 9 years and has extensive experience in the Pacific on law related projects. Lenore evolved systems and processes at PacLII and built links with content contributors. PacLII's current breadth of coverage is a testament to Lenore's tireless efforts to support free access to the law in the Pacific.
The staff and students of the University of the South Pacific School of Law
In the early years of PacLII and throughout the years since, USP law staff and students have assisted enormously with the collection, scanning and proof reading of the laws for publication on PacLII. Without their contribution, determination, optimism and sheer hard work, PacLII would not exist.
